Evidence

Clinical outcomes that persist.

The strongest current evidence for Evira relates to pediatric obesity treatment across Swedish, NHS and Abu Dhabi settings. Below: study design, population, measured outcome, follow-up duration and the publication itself.

−0.30

BMI SDS at one year

Compared with approximately −0.15 in matched conventional care.

3 years

Effect maintained

Same cohort, with significantly fewer discontinuations.

Pediatric

Population studied

Children and young people in specialist obesity treatment.

Pragmatic clinical study

Digi-physical treatment compared with conventional care at one year

Study design
Pragmatic clinical study comparing Evira-supported combined lifestyle treatment with matched conventional care recorded in the Swedish BORIS quality register. Adjusted for sex, age and degree of obesity at treatment start.
Population
107 children in Evira-supported treatment; 321 children in conventional care.
Measured outcome
Mean change of approximately −0.30 BMI SDS after one year, compared with approximately −0.15 in matched conventional care.
Follow-up duration
One year.

Long-term follow-up

Maintained treatment effect at three years

Study design
Follow-up of the same cohort, comparing longer-term weight development and treatment discontinuation between the two groups.
Population
428 patients in total across both groups.
Measured outcome
The larger reduction in BMI SDS was maintained at three years, with significantly fewer discontinuations of treatment.
Follow-up duration
Three years.

NHS service evaluation

Early experience in a West Midlands CEW service

Study design
Service evaluation presented by the Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust CEW team at the 2025 annual meeting of the British Society for Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes. Observational service data.
Population
96 children and young people had started using Evira; 44 had reached six months of use at evaluation.
Measured outcome
Mean change of −0.13 in BMI z-score at six months. No significant technological barriers reported within the cohort.
Follow-up duration
Six months.

International validation study

Comparable outcomes in Abu Dhabi and Stockholm

Study design
Non-inferiority intervention study using an external historical comparator. Children treated with Evira at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City in Abu Dhabi were compared with a previously published Stockholm cohort, using a predefined non-inferiority margin of 0.10 BMI z-score.
Population
60 children aged 6–15.9 years were recruited in Abu Dhabi. The final analysis included 35 Abu Dhabi participants with 26-week data and 77 participants from the Stockholm comparator cohort.
Measured outcome
Adjusted mean BMI z-score change was −0.20 in both cohorts at 26 weeks, confirming non-inferiority. Non-retention was higher in Abu Dhabi than Stockholm (41.7% versus 28.0%), an important limitation when interpreting transferability.
Follow-up duration
26 weeks.

How to read this

What the evidence does and does not cover

Population

The controlled comparisons concern pediatric obesity treatment. Evira is also used in adult obesity services, but we do not present the pediatric results as evidence for adult populations.

Setting

The one- and three-year studies were conducted in Swedish care. NHS material is a service evaluation. The Abu Dhabi study used an external historical Stockholm comparator and supports transferability to an additional context, not general applicability across all healthcare systems.

Interpretation

Observational service data describe what teams have seen in practice. They do not establish that Evira caused the reported changes.
